STUDENTS MUST APPEND AND ATTEST TO THE FOLLOWING STATEMENT ON EACH REPORT (PRELIMINARY AND FINAL) SUBMITTED IN THIS COURSE

“On my honor, as an Aggie, I have neither given nor received unauthorized aid on this academic work.”

The report on this project will account for 25% of your grade.

Introduction: The IPY 2007-2008 is unique opportunity to bring together researchers from around the world to study the Polar Regions in unison. A stringent set of criteria and a rigorous process were used to approve IPY projects. Over 200 projects have been recognized by the ICSU/WMO Joint IPY Committee as “sanctioned IPY projects”.  To engage and immerse GEOS 489/689 course participants in IPY 2007-2008 activities, each student is to identify a science project specifically planned for the IPY. These projects can be located by searching the web and by going to the IPY Program Office site which is a repository of information related to all IPY activities. Examples are provided on the course website and your instructors can assist in locating an appropriate project.

Your Assignment (1-page preliminary report): Locate a science project and provide a 1-page description of the project and your plans for monitoring the project during the term of the course. This preliminary report should be an abbreviated version of the contents of the final report described below. Over the term of the course keep a log of your interactions with the project. Include any observations about the activities as they occur and/or interactions with the Project Team.

Final Report (2 page maximum length): Describe the project you monitored, your level of participation, what you learned from the project, and what would you have done differently to improve or enhance the outcomes of the project. Please prepare a one page project description that includes:

  • Name of the Project
  • The Principle Investigators and Affiliations
  • The URL for the project’s home site
  • Describe what the project entails
  • What are the expected outcomes
  • What are the activities, methodologies and/or processes employed to accomplish the project
  • What role did you play, if any, in the project?
  • How did you fulfill your role?
