The Office of Polar Programs, National Science Foundation (NSF), has released the 2008 Antarctic Research solicitation (NSF 08-535; http://www.nsf.gov/funding/pgm_summ.jsp?pims_id=5519&org=ANT&from=home) for support of projects in Antarctica during the 2009-2010 austral summer or projects in the United States beginning in early 2009. Unlike previous Antarctic Research solicitations, this year there are two proposal submission deadlines. The first, 2 May 2008, is for proposals for research aboard the Swedish icebreaker Oden during November and December 2008. The second deadline, 6 June 2008, is for all proposals for antarctic work other than work on the Oden during November and December 2008.

The third biennial SCAR Open Science Conference will be held in St. Petersburg, Russia from 8 to 11 July, 2008. The 2008 conference is the first recognized International Polar Year 2007-2008 Conference and is jointly sponsored by the Scientific Committee on Antarctic Research (SCAR) and the International Arctic Science Committee (IASC). The theme is “Polar Research - Arctic and Antarctic Perspectives in the International Polar Year”. The Open Science Conference is an international and interdisciplinary meeting that brings together students and investigators of all ages from around the world with interests in polar science and research. The symposium is an excellent opportunity to view and discuss the most recent and important polar research.
