ARCUS announces two Live from IPY! events taking place at the American Geophysical Union (AGU) Fall Meeting in San Francisco, California. The events are open to the public (registration required) and will be held in Sierra A (5th floor) of the San Francisco Marriott Hotel. Online and teleconference participation are available to individuals who cannot attend in person.

Live from IPY! celebrates the International Polar Year by transporting the public to remote polar locations through live from the field calls and Internet presentations. Live from IPY! utilizes an Internet platform that supports real-time online presentations, audio, and chat functions to allow for interaction with teachers and researchers during their PolarTREC expeditions.

Live from IPY! - South Pole Ozone Changes

*****************************************

When: Wednesday, 12 December 2007, 8:30 to 9:30 a.m. PST

Where: Marriott Hotel, Sierra A (5th floor)

PolarTREC teacher Elke Bergholz and a team of atmospheric researchers are at the NOAA Clean Air Facility at the South Pole Station to collect current data on atmospheric ozone to compare with data they collected in 1999. Ms. Bergholz and the team will attempt to measure the positive influences of the Montreal Protocol on substances that deplete the ozone layer. The group will be collecting information on atmospheric ozone (surface ozone, total ozone, and ozone profiles), carbon dioxide, and aerosols. Comparisons will be made to atmospheric data in other parts of the world in order to predict the influence that the Kyoto Protocol and other clean air policies might have.
