Dear friends,

Happy New Year.

I am writing to you as IPY partners in countries with a  strong polar history .. and polar archives. Please forward to anyone else you think

might be interested in collaboration.

Olaf Willoughby, photographer and IPY partner, is interested in coordinating a project that engages polar tourists by inviting them to

take photographs of regions they will visit, and for which we have archival material. The idea was stimulated by a glaciologist interested

in both documenting change, and also in educating visitors who can observe and learn about the changing scenery. This material could also

be valuable for documenting the landscape during this IPY, and thus become a valuable archive for the future.

Do you have any archival images from currently-visited polar areas that we could use for this project? It would be great to have a range of

photos from several countries to really highlight the international nature of IGY and IPY (though the images don't need to be restricted to

the IGY or earlier IPYs). We have been in touch with IAATO, the Antarctic Tourism Association, who are happy to connect us to Antarctic

visitors. If any of you have similar connections to Arctic tour companies, that would also be useful.

At this stage, we are looking for low resolution jpeg versions of original historic images. These should be a maximum of 800 pixels

longest dimension, which we could use on a web site and visually for rough 'then and now' comparisons.  Later, if the opportunity for an

educational book or exhibition arises, we would contact you to ask permission for a high resolution version of the image. Meantime, as we

will be collecting images from a number of sources, so please be sure to detail the copyright situation on any images you may be able to provide.

Please respond to Olaf Willoughby (olafwilloughby@googlemail.com) and myself as Olaf will be following up on this mail.

I look forward to working with you all throughout 2008,

best wishes

Rhian
