In the past 20 years China has actively participated in numerous polar research activities in cooperation with the United States. China has forged ties of friendship with the US in polar science in recent years. China has greatly increased bilateral and multilateral cooperation for the joint implementation of polar scientific study. The cooperation covers topics such as navigation in icy regions, the psychological study of scientists working in polar areas, research facilities and logistics. US organizations provided valuable technological assistance and information to China's first arctic expedition. China Arctic Research Institute, based in Shanghai, has conducted wide-ranging cooperative research and academic exchanges as well as visiting research organizations in the US. The RRT on “China -US Polar Region Partnerships: The International Polar Year 2007-2008 and Beyond”  will address the critical role of scientific and research collaboration between China and the US related to the exploration and study of our planet’s polar regions These RRT discussions are an opportunity for academic and governmental leaders from the two countries to discuss issues of mutual concern in the polar regions and the ramifications of change in these regions to national development and security. The discussions will promote a dialogue on China-US cooperation in the Polar Regions based on collaborative research planned during the IPY 2007-2008. The RRT discussions will identify projects and programs for future collaboration.
